Book Covers

Measure the book before you pick a style: width, height and the thickness of the spine. The standard sizes here are A5, A4, US Half Letter and US Letter, and most of the leather book covers and sleeves in this collection can also be made to the measurements you send, which is how a thick study Bible or an odd-sized hardback gets a cover that closes.

Three ways to cover a book

A wrap cover stays on while you read. On the Book Cover and the Book Cover Vintage, the book's own boards slide into pockets inside the leather, and a long leather tie winds around the outside to keep it shut in a bag. The Book Cover Classic is the same jacket without the tie, so there is nothing to undo when you open it.

A sleeve is for carrying, not reading. The Leather Book Sleeve is a flat envelope with a flap and a tie: the book goes in, you close it, it goes in your bag. For books you carry every day, the Book Handbag is a small bag with a top handle, a shoulder strap and a front pocket, sized from the width, height and spine you enter on the product page.

Leather and lettering

Every piece is full-grain Crazy Horse leather. It is waxed, so the spine lightens where it flexes, and a light scratch rubs out with a thumb. A title, a name or initials can be laser engraved, or stamped into the leather plain or in gold or silver foil; foil suits short words best. Colors are Black, Brown, Cognac, Light Cognac and Green.

What leather is used for book covers?

Here, full-grain cowhide finished as Crazy Horse. It is waxed, so it shows handling marks and lets you rub them back out. On a cover that rides in a bag every day, that matters more than a surface that stays perfect.

Will a custom leather book cover fit my book?

What's the difference between a book cover and a book sleeve?

You read with a cover on; the book lives inside it. A sleeve is a pouch you slide the book into for the trip and take it out of to read.

Why aren't books bound in leather anymore?

Mostly cost: leather binding is slow handwork. A removable cover is the practical middle ground, because the book keeps its original binding and the leather takes the wear.
